Brussels Neighborhood Guide: Ixelles vs. Saint-Gilles (2026)

"Where should I live?" It's the #1 question for expats and students moving to Brussels. The answer often comes down to two neighboring communes: the posh and polished Ixelles or the bohemian Saint-Gilles.

If you're torn between the trendy bars of Flagey and the artistic markets of the Parvis, read on.

Ixelles (Elsene): The Popular Professional

Ixelles is vast, stretching from the European Parliament to the upscale Bois de la Cambre. It’s arguably the most sought-after address for young professionals and expats working for the EU.

  • The Vibe: International, stylish, and buzzing. From the "bobos" (bohemian bourgeois) in Châtelain to the students near the university.
  • Top Spots: Place Flagey (ponds & terrace), Place du Châtelain (Wednesday market), Matonge (African vibes).
  • Rent: Expect to pay a premium.
    • Studio: €800 - €1,100
    • Coliving Room: €750 - €950

Pros: Safe, clean, international community, endlessly walkable. Cons: Can be pricey and crowded on weekends.

Saint-Gilles (Sint-Gillis): The Artistic Soul

If Ixelles is the polished professional, Saint-Gilles is the authentic artist. It feels like a village within the city, with stunning Art Nouveau facades and a strong sense of local community.

  • The Vibe: Relaxed, diverse, and creative. Less polished than Ixelles but full of character and hidden gems.
  • Top Spots: Parvis de Saint-Gilles (daily market & massive terraces), Barrière (transport hub), Horta Museum.
  • Rent: Slightly more affordable, but rising fast due to gentrification.
    • Studio: €700 - €1,000
    • Coliving Room: €650 - €850

Pros: Vibrant local culture, great architecture, better value for money. Cons: Can be noisy near the Parvis, slightly grittier in some parts.

Comparison: By the Numbers
